This is a record of building our sun-tempered, off-grid cordwood house in Maine, with the goal of sharing our successes and failures so that others can learn from our experiences. (This is also a way to keep our family and friends updated!)
Our goals in building and moving to Sunnywood include reducing our impact and our expenses as well as simplifying our lives. We wanted to create a relatively "green" house that works with its surrounding environment, is not costly to build, and is easy and inexpensive to maintain, heat, and live in. We wanted to use materials that don't have a lot of embodied energy, don't cost a lot, don't require a lot of maintenance, and are healthful to live around. We wanted to employ a building method—post and beam with cordwood infilling—that is simple and forgiving enough to avoid the need for paid expertise.
We have found some of those goals easier to fulfill than others, and have had to make some compromises along the way. We will try to remember to point these out, for the benefit of those who may be embarking upon similar projects.
