I forgot to mention that our neighbor Richard---who has been very good to us but is clearly having a hard time getting his head around our project---graced us with two more of his neighborisms the other day.
"Startin' to look almost home-like," he smiled, walking in. Then, frowning, "Well, camp-like, maybe." He smiled again, reassuring us. "I've seen worse!"

I am SO enjoying reading your blog! We live in sunny South Africa - The mildest weather for 8 months and then four months of cold (No snow, light frost dipping below freezing occasionally)- now fast approaching. We live in a affluent suburb of Johannesburg - in our tents. We bought the property last September, renovated the existing house and rented it out to help pay the bond. The back 1500 square meters is surrounded by trees so the neighbours don't even know we are living in tents with a humanure toilet.
The last month we have been hard hit by storms so I built a pole and corrugated structure and am digging rubble trenches which will be topped with temporary strawbales and canvas. In the end we hope to have a passive solar cob cottage.
Thanks for sharing your experience in such detail. So inspiring!

Thanks for sharing your story, Leonie. It is so interesting to hear from people in very different kinds of places doing similar things. If we build anything else out of cordwood, we are thinking of using cob instead of mortar. Good luck with your passive-solar cob cottage!
